유성기에 재매개화된 음반극(音盤劇) <심청전> 연구

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to examine the remediation of Korean gramophone dramas remediated from the SimCheong narrative in the 1930s and to reveal their literary significance. With the introduction of the new medium of the gramophone, traditional art styles like pansori were also recorded. This process sometimes led to a transformation of pansori into plays, giving rise to a genre known as gramophone dramas. Since standard-play (SP) records had commercial characteristics, they were sensitive to the tastes of the consumer public. Therefore, the Korean gramophone dramas need to be examined in the context of contemporary cultural trends. On the other hand, the SimCheong narrative was one of the classical narratives that was most actively remediated into gramophone dramas, making these dramas a crucial resource for examining the narratives status through the recorded lyrics that remain. Accordingly, the significance of these dramas in literary history will be investigated by locating their remediation patterns within the cultural climate of the 1930s, when they were produced. Chapter 1 examines the concept of 'remediation' and determines the scope of the research subject. Remediation refers to the formal logic by which newly born media modify existing media. It focuses on the cultural context of the newly born media and their relation to other media, making it a useful concept for examining the gramophone dramas of the SimCheong narrative, which contain not only traditional cultural elements but also contemporary cultural elements of the 1930s. Using this research method, this study analyzes <Movie Play SimCheong-Jeon>, <Tragedy SimCheong-yi>, <Mangeuk Modern SimCheong-Jeon>, and <Okeh Changgeuk SimCheong-Jeon>. In Chapter 2, the study presents basic data on the selected subjects. Specifically, the narrative structure of the gramophone dramas were classified, compared, and contrasted based on the structure of <Okeh Changgeuk SimCheong-Jeon>, which contains subheadings in the lyric sheets that were distributed with the record. Chapter 3 focuses on 'domestic tragedy' as a keyword to indicate the public's response to the SimCheong narrative at that time. All of the gramophone dramas of the SimCheong narrative are based on this domestic tragedy, and irony arises from the pursuit of filial piety leading to sorrow and woe. The dramas are divided based on how they embody this irony, into cases where the tragedy becomes full-scale and cases where comedic elements are revealed. The former category consists of <Movie Play SimCheong-Jeon> and <Tragedy SimCheong-yi>, where the narrative composition is remediated around the primary tragedy of the SimCheong narrative while omitting elements that could lead to caricature. This is due to the fact that SP records had to be popular as commercial products. Moreover, both works consist of scenes centered on discourse between characters, increasing the public's immersion in the tragic situations. The latter category consists of <Mangeuk Modern SimCheong-Jeon>, and <Okeh Changgeuk SimCheong-Jeon>. The style of these Gramophone Dramas is established, and comedic elements are also highlighted, in relation to the 1930s contemporary arts of comic talk (漫談), Man-yo (漫謠), Manmun-manhua (漫文漫畫), and stage changgeuk. In this process, the contemporary settings represented in each work also contribute to the formation of comedy. Chapter 4 builds on the findings of Chapter 3 to investigate the literary significance of the dramas. Unlike the SimCheong narrative, which had been remediated during the previous era, <Tragedy SimCheong-yi> undergoes a transformation into a full-scale tragedy. This tragedy is embodied at both the musical and narrative levels, sharing emotions and aesthetic qualities with other contemporary literary products such as pansori, movies, and traditional music. On the other hand, in <Mangeuk Modern SimCheong-Jeon>, the traditional ethics of filial piety (孝) and fidelity (烈) may be found to conflict with each other in the discourse between characters. This reflects the chaotic social reality of colonial Joseon in the 1930s and reveals the historical character of the work.

본 논문은 1930년대 유성기 음반극 <심청전>의 재매개화 양상을 고찰하고, 그 문예사적 의의를 밝히는 것을 목적으로 한다. 새로운 매체인 유성기가 도입됨에 따라, 전통적 예술 양식인 판소리도 음반으로 취입되기 시작했다. 그 과정에서 판소리는 극((劇) 양식으로 장르적 변용을 거치기도 하는데, 해당 장르를 유성기 음반극이라고 한다. 유성기 음반은 상업적 특성을 지니기 때문에 소비 대중의 취향에 민감할 수밖에 없다. 따라서 유성기 음반극은 당대의 문화적 동향 속에서 파악될 필요가 있다. 한편 고전 서사 중 유성기 음반극의 형태로는 심청 서사가 활발히 재매개화되었으며, 현전하는 가사지 혹은 채록본을 통해 그 실태를 살피기에도 적합하기에 특히 중요한 자료가 된다. 이에 유성기 음반극 <심청전>의 재매개화 양상을 해당 작품이 산출된 1930년대의 문화적 풍토에 근거해 이해함으로써 그 문예사적 의의를 규명할 것이다. 1장에서는 연구 방법인 재매개화의 개념을 살피고, 연구 대상의 범위를 확정했다. 재매개(remediation)는 새로운 미디어가 앞선 미디어를 개조하는 형식적 논리를 가리킨다. 새로운 미디어의 문화적 맥락과 더불어 미디어 간의 관계적 맥락에 주목한다는 점에서, 전통문화적 요소뿐 아니라 당대적인 문화 요소도 내포하고 있는 유성기 음반극 <심청전>을 살피기에 적절한 개념이다. 이러한 연구 방법에 근거해, 유성기 음반극 <심청전> 중에서도 <영화극 심청전>, <비극 심청이>, <만극 모던 심청전> 그리고 <오케판 창극 심청전>을 연구 대상으로 선정했다. 아울러 2장에서는 연구 대상의 기본적인 자료 해제 작업을 수행했다. 특히 발매 당시부터 함께 유통된 가사지에 대목별 분절이 소제와 함께 이루어져 있는 <오케판 창극 심청전>의 각 서사 대목에 근거해, 여타 유성기 음반극 <심청전>의 서사 단락을 구분하고 각각을 비교·대조했다. 3장에서는 본격적인 분석을 위한 키워드로, 원전인 심청 서사에 대한 당시 대중의 반응을 드러내는 지표인 가정비극에 착목했다. 유성기 음반극 <심청전> 작품 모두 원전 심청 서사의 가정비극적 제재를 기반으로 하고 있으며, 효의 실현을 위한 행위가 곧 비장과 비애를 주조한다는 점에서 이들 작품에 아이러니가 발생한다. 이러한 아이러니가 구체적으로 형상화되는 양상에 따라 본고에서 다루는 유성기 음반극 <심청전>은 비극성이 전면화되는 경우와 골계성이 표면화되는 경우로 나뉜다. 전자에는 <영화극 심청전>과 <비극 심청이>가 속하는데, 해당 작품에서는 원전 심청 서사의 눈대목 위주로 서사 구성이 재매개화되며, 인물을 희화화할 수 있는 대목은 생략된다. 이렇듯 비극적 대목 위주로의 재매개화는 취입 시간에 제한이 있고, 판매 상품인 만큼 상업성 및 대중성을 고려해야 한다는 유성기의 매체적 특질에서 기인한 것이다. 아울러 두 작품 모두 인물 간 담화 위주로 장면을 구성해 비극적 상황에 대한 청취 대중의 몰입도를 높인다. 후자에는 <만극 모던 심청전>과 <오케판 창극 심청전>이 속한다. 해당 작품은 각각 만담·만요·만문만화, 그리고 무대 창극이라는 동시대 예술과의 관련 속에서 음반극의 양식이 확립되고 골계성 또한 부각된다. 이 과정에서 각 작품에 표상된 당대 시대상 역시 골계성의 형성에 일조한다. 4장에서는 3장의 내용을 토대로, 유성기 음반극 <심청전>의 문예사적 의의를 규명했다. 유성기 음반극 <심청전> 중 특히 <비극 심청이>에는 이전 시기에 재매개화된 심청 서사와 달리 비극성을 전경화하는 식의 변용이 이루어졌다는 점에 주목했다. 이러한 비극성은 작품의 서사적 차원과 함께 음악적 차원에서도 구현되는 것이며, 판소리·영화·전통음악과 같은 동시대 여타 문예적 산물과 공유되던 정서이자 미적 자질이기도 하다. 한편, <만극 모던 심청전>에서는 효와 열이라는 전통적 윤리가 인물 간의 갈등 속에서 상충하는 양상이 발견된다. 이는 1930년대 식민지 조선의 혼란한 사회 현실을 반영한 것으로, 작품이 가지는 역사적 성격을 드러낸다.
