중학교 교사의 소명의식 형성 과정 연구

Abstract

교사의 소명의식은 지속적인 교육헌신에 강력한 영향을 미칠 뿐만 아니라 교사의 전문성 신장과도 밀접한 관련이 있다. 본 연구는 교사의 소명의식 형성 과정을 규명하는 것을 목적으로 수행되었다. 이를 위해 소명의식이 투철하다고 인정되는 공립 중학교 교사 14명을 추천받아 심층면담을 실시하였다. 근거이론을 활용하여 교사들의 소명의식이 어떻게 촉발되고 형성되었으며 그 계기는 무엇이고, 소명의식이 형성되고 진화하는 과정 및 특징을 분석하였다. 연구 결과 첫째, 교사의 소명의식은 교직에 입문한 이후 기대 불일치와 급격한 공감이라는 경험을 주요 계기로 촉발되었다. 둘째, 교사의 소명의식은 변화된 믿음과 개선된 실행을 하는 정당화 과정을 통해 형성됨을 확인하였다. 셋째, 소명의식 형성의 결과는 사회와 연계된 목적 형성, 다차원적 역할 부여, 지속적 자기조절로 나타났다. 교사들의 소명의식의 형성과정은 자신의 삶에서 교직의 의미와 가치를 발견하고 정당화하는 과정으로 나타났다. 본 연구결과를 바탕으로 교사교육 및 전문성 신장에 관한 실천적 제언과 후속연구를 제안하였다.

This study aims at identifying the process of developing the sense of calling in the teaching profession. We conducted in-depth interviews with 14 middle school teachers considered to be having a committed sense of calling. Utilizing grounded theory approach, we specifically examined which experiences triggered the sense of calling for these teachers and how they understood and deepened it in their duties. The results first show that a sense of calling is triggered by the teachers experiences representing expectation discrepancy and dramatic empathy for their students. Second, the teachers develop a sense of calling by the process of justification representing changed belief and improved practice. Third, the teachers who realized a sense of calling understand and pursue those goals associated with ensuring social responsibilities in the teaching profession, strive to play multifaceted roles, and continuously control themselves to integrate their goals and actions. The significance of the study and its practical implications for teacher education programs are also discussed.
