만주어 문어 -me bi의 의미 변화

Abstract

만주어 문어에 나타나는 -me bi의 문법적 지위는 연구자에 따라 다르게 기술되었다. 혹자는 -me bi를 현재 진행을 의미하는 형식으로 기술하여 -mbi와 구별하였고, 혹자는 -me bi가 bi 있다의 어휘적 의미를 유지하고 있으므로 완전히 문법화가 이루어진 하나의 형식으로 볼 수 없다고 주장한다. 실제로 만주어 문어에 나타나는 -me bi의 의미를 검토하면 현재 진행 중인 상황을 가리키면서 동시에 누가/무엇이 어디에 있다라는 어휘적 의미를 유지하고 있는 경우가 대부분이기 때문에 어느 한 입장만을 선택하기 어렵다. 본고는 시간의 흐름에 따라 -me bi의 의미가 점차 변화하였을 가능성을 확인하기 위해 17세기 초부터 19세기 중반의 만주어 문어에 나타나는 -me bi의 분포와 의미를 직설법 종결어미로 사용된 경우에 한정하여 비교하였는데, 두 가지 현저한 변화가 발견되었다. 첫째, 있다, 습관적인 상황, 현재 진행 중인 상황 등 넓은 의미를 가리키던 -me bi가 현재 진행 중인 상황만을 가리키게 되었다. 둘째, tuwaci 보니 구문과 함께 눈앞의 생생한 현장을 제시하는 경우에 종결어미로 -mbi가 주로 쓰이던 것이 -me bi로 대체되었다. 이러한 변화는 -me bi가 시간의 흐름에 따라 현재 진행 중인 상황을 나타내는 전형적인 형식으로 고착되었음을 보여준다.

The grammatical status of Written Manchu -me bi has been described in different ways in previous studies. Some studies distinguish -me bi from -mbi, considering it as a grammaticalized form with the meaning of to be in the progress of, while others argue that -me bi cannot be considered as a grammaticalized form because of its strong relevance with the lexical meaning of bi to exist. Survey on Written Manchu makes it difficult to stand for one of these contrasting views since most examples of -me bi represent both the meaning of in the progress of and the meaning of to exist' at the same time. In order to review the possibility that a diachronic change occurred in the meaning of -me bi when used as an indicative finite verbal suffix, this study compared four varieties of Written Manchu, ranging from early 17th to mid 19th century, revealing that there have been two major changes between the periods. First, the scope of the meaning of -me bi has been narrowed; while -me bi in the 17th century could represent an existence of somebody/something, a habitual situation, or an action in progress, it could only represent an action in progress' in the 19th century. Second, when preceded by tuwaci "looking" which was used in Written Manchu to describe a situation in a vivid manner, forms with a finite verbal suffix -mbi have been replaced with those with -me bi. These changes show that over time, -me bi has become a typical form to represent a situation in progress, while it is uncertain that -me bi can be categorized as a form representing the progressive aspect.
