On the categorial status of such, there have been many attempts to capture its complicated and idiosyncratic semantic and syntactic properties. However, even in the influential grammar books, a word-class of such does appear to be out of accord with each other. In this paper, after investigating various properties of such and reviewing the main previous studies, I indicate the limitations of the previous analyses and furthermore attempt to establish a new categorization of such : the 'modifier' such as adjective, and the 'head' such as pronoun.-
