Abstract

With steady increase in the demand for parcel delivery services, logistics service

providers are facing a constant pressure to reduce delivery price in order to secure

quantity order and to improve the efficiency and reliability for customer service. Most

of the previous studies on distribution networks were concerned with the optimal

design of the network given fixed demand. Few studies have devoted to find the

impact of the demand increase on the structural change of parcel distribution network.

The objective of this research is to explain the effect of change in delivery service

demand increase on the operation and the structure of the parcel distribution networks.

Such effects are studies in three levels of decision makings in the distribution

networks: operational, tactical, and strategic levels. Based on system dynamics

approach, this study attempts to identify the causal-loop model including parcel

delivery service demand, sorting capacity in the hub, and the system performance

measures such as distribution cost and service reliability. The scope of this paper is to

establish a conceptual model that can suggest desirable policies in operating and

designing parcel distribution network in response to the demand increase.
