Abstract

abstractKoreans consider economic development and maintenance of reasonable consumption as the basic factor of the quality of life. Koreans regard the political democratization second to economic well-being. Hence, protection of environment, purporting of more equitable distribution of income, and imposition of restraints on big businesses and so on are not expressly supported under the tacit understanding that these measures could be harmful to economic development. This attitude is somewhat different from those observed in developed societies, where bigger weights are given to non-economic value and sustainable growth.As Korean economy develops and regional autonomy is to be upheld with the internal substantiation of democratization, Koreans would be changed to be similar to other developed and more democratized countries. They would give more importance to such concerns as environment, social welfare, income distribution, and labor relations. Demographical transformation involving more younger generation together with external influences associated with so called green round, blue round, and competition round will surely alter the growthdominated attitude thus far discovered these 30 years or so.
