- Abstract
- The purpose of this study is to clarify cognitive system for local identity and development of entrepreneur who takes leading role in local activation movement of western islands in Japan. In recent years, endogenous development which the shortcut to accomplish local activation is looking for the well-matched course with peculiar local circumstances, come to the front. The developmental orientation of entrepreneur in Fukue city is similiar to this point of view. So the peculiarity of island is reflected in their cognitive system to local identity and development.
The focal frame of reference to local identity of entrepreneurs in Fukue city is "insularity". Meaning of insularity include frames of reference of cognitive system which are center-periphery, tradition-modernity, development-preservation (of nature). Connecting this frames with the concept of insularity complicatedly, the local identity and developmental strategy are created. According to circumstances, ecological, historical, socioeconomic, cultural resources which connected with insularity, are had symbolic meaning in the context of center-periphery, tradition-modernity, development -preservation. Therefore, meaning of insularity is changed in according to situations and include ambiguity and ambivalence. The fundamental cause of it is importance of looking for way of suitable interpretation to peculiar situation. And because it is significant to search for pragmatic advantages by way of concept of insularity. To live not only affluently but meaningfully," it is necessary to make new concept, meaning and connotation of usual resources in local level and areas. In this context entrepreneurs are really cultural guides in local community.
