The theme of 'love' played an important role in monastic life and literature of the Middle Ages. The concept of love or loving in monastic exegesis was expanded on the basis of The Song of Songs and The Psalms, and also provided a strong theological foundation for the practical life of the monks and nuns. The works and thought of Bernard of Clairvaux (1090-1153) highlight the discussion of love in the wider context of medieval monasticism. Paying special attention to Bernard's De diligendo Deo, I will explore the Bernardian usage of the concepts of love and loving God.-
