dc.description.abstract | This study aims to clarify the changing processes of the Korean consonantal clusters, especially in word-initial. In order to achieve the aim, we examine the word-initial consonantal clusters and their phonotactic constraints in Middle Korean, and then investigate their equivalent forms in Contemporary Korean dialects. Finally, we identify their diachrony through comparing the Middle Korean forms with their contemporary dialectal forms. The main points of this paper can be summarized as follows : There were the word-initial clusters pk'(ᄢ), pt(ᄠ), pt'(ᄣ), pth(ᄩ), ps(ᄡ), pʧ(ᄧ) in Middle Korean. Firstly, the aspiration of t occurred in pt cluster, which was due to the phonotactic constraint, exactly lenis-lenis stop linking constraint. Secondly, the aspiration was substituted by the fortition, and the phonotactic constraint was expanded into lenis-lenis linking constraints. But in Jeju dialect, these phonological changes were happened lately. As a result, the aspiration of ʧ occurred in pʧ cluster as well as t in pt cluster in Jeju dialect. Lastly, the initial consonant p of every cluster was deleted in all dialects. | - |
