Up to the 19th century the literati of the upper class in Korea had received various kinds of poetry genres of China and made progress in quality of Korean poems, leading to the development of the classical Korean poetry. However, they thought highly of the Sino-Korean poetry in the recent style and put much effort in its writing. Such atmosphere deterred the Korean poetry from developing itself in quality and liveliness. The influence of the Chinese poetry on the Korean counterpart was prominent in the selection of materials and the way of expression. It also was distinct in the theme of poetry, while it was not that distinct in the form. While the reception of the Chinese poetry had no little influence on the development of the Korean poetry, it is thought not to have played any central or pivotal role. The development of the Korean poetry was made on the axis of the inheritance or conquest of its internal tradition. Therefore, the Chinese poetry may have to be understood as much as enriching and coloring the Korean poetry, based on the internal tradition of the latter. The scope and effect of the influence of the Chinese poetry should not be too much emphasized to the extent that the development of the Korean poetry depended almost entirely on it.-
