Abstract

The purpose of this study is to elucidate the influences of New Criticism on Korean postwar modernist poetics. Korean postwar modernist poetics was influenced by New Criticism which was earnestly introduced to the Korean literature from the 1950s. By dint of New Criticism, it could recognize that unintelligibility of a poem, that is. difficulties in understanding of a work should be placed under the category of the aesthetic and emphasized that poetic languages would not only consist of a poem as a concrete, but also create a universal meaning as a poem. In understanding of it as it is, therefore, we must study on the influences of New Criticism on it.

Focusing on both the unintelligibility of a poem and the creativity of poetic languages, the Korean postwar modernist poetics could inquire into not only the mechanism of the production of meanings in a poem, but also the relations of between the subject and the object. In this essay. I insisted that these changes revealed in it should be evaluated as the positive influences of New Criticism on it. But. that was not the whole influences of New Criticism on it. In dealing with both the unintelligibility of a poem and the creativity of poetic languages, the Korean postwar modernist poetics showed a tendency to separate them from the reality of the Korean postwar. In this essay, accordingly. I pointed out that some of the influences of New Criticism on it were blamed for that tendency.

In conclusion, the Korean postwar modernist poetics was influenced by New Criticism in two ways. Under the influences of New Criticism, on the one hand, it entered a new phase of the profound and abstruse world of poetic language, on the other hand it began to disregard the reality of poetic meanings.
