- Abstract
- Geummyeong/錦溟 Bojeong/寶鼎(1861~1930) was a Buddhist priest from the Buhyu line(浮休系) of the Songgwang-sa/松廣寺 temple. He had authored many books in his efforts to review and inherit the Buddhist traditions of the latter half period of the Joseon dynasty. He perceived the history of Buddhism and wrote about it in a very traditional way, and the characteristic of his own perception of the Buddhist history was to emphasize the legacy(遺風) of Bojo/普照 Jinul/知訥 of the Songgwang-sa temple, and the legitimacy of the Buhyu line as well. This kind of emphasis was based upon a rather prejudiced historical view, which did not recognize one of the two main lines(系派) of the Buddhist society of the latter half period of the Joseon dynasty, the Cheongheo line(淸虛系). But his advocation of the Jogyae-jong/曹溪宗 sect and the fact that he managed to connect the legacy of Jinul to the traditions of the Buhyu line did harbor a considerable meaning, as he essentially pioneered and contributed to the advocation of the Jogyae-jong legacy. During the Japanese Occupation period, there had been a controversy regarding the issue of founding a religious order(宗團), which involved deciding the Order"s name (宗名) and identifying the Founder figure(宗祖) that would represent the Buddhist society of Korea. In the 1940s, "Jogyae-jong" was chosen as the official Order name of the Joseon Buddhism, and is still being used today. In that regard, Bojeong"s view of the Buddhist history does feature both aspects of inheriting the traditions, and creating a legacy.
