Abstract

In this article, the life of a Yusaeng/儒生 figure named Lee PIl Ik/李必益, when he was in a political exile in the Anbyeon area of the Hamgyeong -do province during the latter half period of the 17th century, is examined, through his memoir ??Pukchan-rok/北竄錄(Exile diary in North)??.

During the Second Yaesong/禮訟 Controversy(Fiery debates and conflicts over ceremonial protocol issues), Lee Pil Ik prepared an appeal supporting Song Shi Yeol and presented it to the King, and was summarily sent to exile. But this incident managed to change his life. Although he had been a nameless Yusaeng/儒生 figure only engaged in Confucian studies, the cause of his exile took him out of obscurity, and the Seoin/西人 party Seoweon/書院 and Hyanggyo/鄕校 schools aligned with Song Shi Yeol/송시열, the Yurim/儒林 society and other influential social figures actively organized a major supporting campaign for him. With their support, Lee Pil Ik was able to maintain a stable living even in his exile, and was elevated to the status of a national figure, with significant political influence.

His wife and son came to his place of exile and lived there together. To support his own family, he had to make plans for a living, including the renovation of the residence he was living in, and securing some land for agricultural cultivation. The local authorities also actively helped him. But even when he was officially freed from his exile(解配), the Hwangok grains he received from the local affairs office became an issue, and along with certain agricultural problems caused by a streak of bad years, he was forced to remain at the place of his exile for a few more years.
