Abstract
In general Japanese nationalism is considered to have changed its nature from the "sound (or defensive)" one to the "aggressive" one. But this interpretation does not explain the reason of its transformation, nor the continuous aspects of the two nationalisms. In order to overcome these defects in the traditional interpretation, I will explain, in this paper, the nationalism in modern Japan by taking the example of Tokutomi Soho, in terms of the idea of "recognition" which is used by Charles Taylor.

Tokutomi Soho, famous journalist and ardent nationalist whose activity continued for about seventy years, had transformed his assertion as the political situation changed. This paper follows his articles at the time of four wars and its advocate of nationalism, by which I will show the transformation and continuity of Japanese nationalism.
