Simsan (No Su-Hyun), one of the most important Korean painters in modern times, is not correctly evaluated. This essay is aimed to examine his works briefly and evaluate him as a painter in the modern Korean arts. Many of his paintings (mostly landscapes) described the idealistic landscapes of Korea. Another influential painter, Chungjun (Lee Sang-Bum), one of his fellow painters, had been interested in painting Korean landscapes lyrically. The idealism of Simsan and the lyrically of Chungjun are both the results of their lift-long study of Korean traditional paintings. They had been taught by a teacher, named Simjun (An Jung-Sik), so their early paintings are similar to each other, and sometimes the same in the atmosphere and the technique. But the idealism of Simsan and the lyricism of Chungjun were emerging gradually throughout their career. The two kinds of attitudes for Korean traditional paintings were completed in their old age. We have appreciated their efforts and their accomplishments. Every student of Korean art should be required to study the two kinds of attitudes and develop Korean traditional paintings.-
