Abstract
In Korea, CGMMV was first reported in 1989 and caused widespread
Blood flesh in watermelon field with considerable economic losses in 1995.
Since then, viral disease on cucurbit plants in many fields are being
reported occasionally. The complete nucleotide sequences of the genomic
RNAs of Cucumber green mottle mosaic virus Korean oriental melon strain
(CGMMV-KOM) and Korean watermelon strain (CGMMV-KW) have been
determined and small size RNAs in virion of two CGMMV isolates were
characterized as the subgenomic RNAs.
Each CGMMV strain consists of 6,424 nucleotides of plus-strand
RNA genome. The CGMMV genome consists of 60 and 176 nucleotides of
5' and 3' non-translated regions (NTRs), respectively, and contains four putative open reading frames (ORF1-4). ORFs 1 to 4 encode for proteins of
129, 186, 29, and 17.4-kDa, respectively. Even though two isolates of
CGMMV, CGMMV-KOM and CGMMV-KW have similarity over 98.3%, they
showed different symptom on the inoculum leaves of Chenopodium
amaranticolor; CGMMV-KOM expressed no symptom but CGMMV-KW
expressed chlorotic ringspot.
