In Jean Rhys's Wide Sargasso Sea, the English colonies in the West Indies had undergone a radical change since the Emancipation Act of 1833. The Act shifted the economic base; by putting an end to slavery, it put an end to the class of slave holders. Creoles, the traditional ruling class and slave holders, rapidly went to the dogs and the new whites from England filled the vacuum, and, as a result of it, the cultural and racial conflicts among Creoles, the new whites and the blacks assumed more complex aspects. ..-
