Referential Continuity and Noun Phrases

- This is a brief study on the referential continuity in a Korean narrative discourse. The main purposes of the study are twofold: 1) to look into the possible relationships between the degree of referential continuity on the one hand, and the types/functions of the noun phrases used for the reference on the other, and 2) to see if the measurement procedures of topic continuity proposed by Givón (1983b) are applicable to such a study in a significant way. The findings show that there exist some close relationships between the two phenomena. They also suggest that such objective measurements as proposed by Givón may be used for a more systematic study of discourse, contributing to a better understanding of some of the discourse features.
