Abstract
The aim of this paper is to study some characteristics of the spelling system and the formation of the adverbs of Yidu, an old Korean written language. These are about 150 adverbs in Yidu. The spelling of these adverbs is based mostly on, not the sounds, but the meanings of Chinese characters. A small number of adverbs, however, borrowed the sounds too. In such cases, the original sounds of Chinese characters were often fully used, but occasionally only partially used. The adverbs of Yidu were generally formed by adding suffixes such as y∂k(亦) ci(只) i(以) ho(乎) u(子) y∂(如) yang(良) i(伊) diŋ(丁), and si(是). Among these suffixes, yək(亦) was the most frequently used.
