Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to show the inadequacy of the early approach to word-formation by the generativists. Two important monographs proposed in this framework, Lees(1960) and Levi(1978), are critically reviewed and it is shown that both of them confront many difficulties which are insurmountable. Same kind of criticism will hopefully apply to the revival proposals by Sproat(1985) or Lieher(1992).
