dc.description.abstractThe purpose of this study is to establish the educational theory of social studies education for elementary and secondary schools in Korea with particular concern upon the characteristics, research objects and research methodology of korean social studies education. Few studies have been made in regard to the theoretical foundations of social studies education while lots of studies have been conducted in terms of practical matters of its curricular elements in Korea. As a result of development of theory for korean social studies education, this study has dichotomized the research objects of Korean social studies education into those classified according to curricular elements such as objectives, contents, teaching methods, evaluations, teaching materials and others of social studies education, and those classified according to subject matter basis on which social studies education depends such as political education, economic education, social education, geography education, history education and values education. As for the research methods applicable to the study of social studies education, empirical scientific approach plus historical approach and normative approach have been designated. In view of these research results above, several suggestions are to be made as follows: First, some scholastic activities to establish the theoretical basis of Korean social studies education should be expedited by learned society level. Second, related literature on social studies education, domestic and foreign, should be thorougly analyzed in an effort to prevent unnecessary research overlappings and to find out uncultivated research areas under korean situation. Third, the theory of korean social studies education should be studied in coalition with other teaching fields of subject matter such as language education, mathematics education, science education and others.-
