조선시대 감로탱화 부당장면과 사회성의 상관성

Abstract

감로탱화는 불교의례에 사용되는 종교화다. 대부분의 종교화는 신앙의 대상을 표현하거나 경전의 내용을 도상으로 표현한 것이 주종을 이룬다. 감로탱화는 이러한 종교화의 성격을 담보로 하고 있으면서, 하단에 표현된 내용에 일반적인 인간의 다양한 삶을 반영하고 있다.

감로탱화에 대한 연구는 처음에 일본인들이 시작하였다. 우리나라에서는 1990년대 들어 미술사학자들에 의해 주목받기 시작했다. 따라서 다른 불화의 연구와 마찬가지로 도상적 측면에서 시대의 흐름에 따른 양식을 연구하는 경향이 주를 이루었다. 한편, 미술사적 연구와는 달리 하단에 표현된 복식의 유형과 색채의 상징성을 통해 시대상과 관념적 사고를 고찰하는 복식사적 접근도 이루어졌다. 2000년대 들어서 감로탱화가 추천의례에 사용된 기능적 측면에 주목하여 수륙의례와 연계한 연구도 진행되었다.

감로탱화의 하단에서 육도윤회상을 빌어 표현된 추천대상은 탱화마다 표현된 내용이 조금씩 차이를 모이고 있다. 이는 당시의 사회상이 반영되어 변화를 보이는 것으로, 조선시대 감로탱화가 갖는 특징이라 할 수 있다.

본고에서는 감로탱화의 하단에서 보이고 있는 특징에 주목하여 하단에 표현된 내용과 사회상과 관련성을 고찰하고자 한다. 이러한 작업을 수행함에 있어 장면마다 제명이 표기된 감로탱화를 일차자료로 하고, 제명이 표기되지 않은 탱화를 이차자료로 활용할 것이다.

Nectar Ritual Paintings are religious painting used in ceremonies for the dead. The paintings contain a depiction of Buddha in the upper part, and scenes related to the rituals in the middle. The lower part shows scenes of beings in the six paths of transmigration, focusing mainly on the human level. Especially the scenes in the lower part are subject to change over time, and reflect the society of the time they were made.

By focusing on the specific features that appear in the lower part of the nectar ritual paintings, this paper studies the relationship between the contents of the paintings and the societal features of the Chosŏn Dynasty. In considering the changing meaning of scenes represented in the paintings, those paintings that have title captions have been retained as primary sources. However, in order to analyze phenomena related to the contents, paintings without title captions have been used as secondary source material.
