아리스토텔레스 윤리학에서 이론적 탐구(theōria)와 도덕적 실천(praxis)의 관계

Abstract

아리스토텥레스는 『니코마코스 윤리학』(NE) 10권에서 이론적 탐구활동 내지 관조(theōria)를 최고의 행복이라고 했다. 이 주장은 1960년대 이래로 주지주의와 관련된 많은 논란을 일으켰다. 그중에서 관조의 우월성과 도덕적 실천(praxis)의 자체 목적성 사이의 갈등에 대한 문제를 해결하는 것이 이 논문의 목적이다. 아리스토텔레스의 주지주의가 삶의 궁극적 지향에 대한 추상적인 맥락에서 논의된 반면에, 중용설로 대표되는 그의 도덕적 실천에 대한 논의는 구체적인 행위 선택 이론의 맥락에서 제기된 주장이기 때문에 이른바 이론과 실천의 갈등은 발생하지 않는다는 것이 이 논문의 결론이다. 이를 위해 NE6권의 이론적 앎(sophia)과 실천적 지혜(phronēsis)의 관계를 검토하고 NE10권을 분석한다. 그리고 그의 『정치학』을 실마리로 이론의 우월성이라는 주지주의적 주장이 제기된 맥락의 정확한 이해를 시도한다.

Aristotles assertion in Book 10 of Nichomachean Ethics that theoretical investigation, or theōria, is the ultimate happiness has aroused many debates related to intellectualism since the 1960s. Among these, this essay is focused on the matter of conflict between the priority of theōria and that of praxis. I conclude that the conflict never happens because arguments on his praxissuch as theory of means are given in the context of concrete action choice whereas Aristotelian intellectualism is discussed on the abstract horizon on the ultimate orientation of life. For this, I investigate the relationship between theoretical knowledge (sophia) and practical wisdom (phronēsis) in NE 6 and analyze NE 10. I also try to exactly understand the context in which the intellectual assertion of the priority of theory is given, based on some clues in his Politics.
