Abstract

It is essential that all suregons have practical knowledge of both the identification and most effective management of nutritional and metabolic problems that exist or may arise in their patients. It is especially important in seriously ill patients in whom the provision of adequate enteral or parenteral nutrient substrate may be critical in minizing morbidity and maximizing survival, rehabilitation, and quality of life. In this article the effects of nutritional deficts on the incidence of complications and the assessment of the overall metaboic status in surgical patients are considered and several methods of preventing, correcting, or compensating for these deficits are prensented with special emphasis on total parenteral nutrition.
