Abstract
Backfill-system in abutment generally consists of abutment, embankment and backfill. The settlement or bump is main issue of this system. Configuration of abutment is concave at the side of backfill to reduce concrete volume and cost. The approach of compaction machines to concave area is resticted. So compaction in the concave area is poor. The SB-1 has been used as backfill material, but supply of this material th use of sand and gravel, which are acceptable near construction field are suggested to be alternative. Also, the reinforcement layer is embedded to reduce the settlement. Laboratory model test is carried out to evaluate the effect of configuration change and the reinforcement layer. Also, the feasibility of other backfill materials such as sand and gravel is evaluated through laboratory model test. As a result of test, the feasibility of alternative backfill increases. However, the improvement of compaction from configuration change couldn't be reflected in this test. Further study including this effect needs.
