유까딴 기우제 의례에 나타난 리더쉽의 기원과 의미

Abstract

옥수수의 경작이 시작되는 시기가 되면 유까딴 반도의 대부분의 마을에서는 비를 기원하는 차착 의례를 한다. 마을전체가 하는 공적인 행사로, 전통적인 지도자인 희멘이 주관한다. 마을 사람들이 여러 겹의 또르띠야인 뚜띨레스, 성스러운 음료 발체를 준비하는 동안 희멘은 천정과 세 면이 닫힌 의례의 공간을 만든다. 열린 한 면을 통하여 의례의 공간으로 들어간 희멘은 스스로 세상의 중심이 되고, 각각의 귀퉁이에 하늘을 받치는 신을 상징하는 젊은이를 세운다. 오방위의 중심이 된 희멘은 네 귀퉁이의 탁자를 돌며 천체의 운행을 재현하며 비의 신과의 대화를 하고 마침내 비를 불러온다. 희멘이 이끄는 오늘날의 의례는 메소아메리카 문명 형성기의 유산인 찰까친고에서 발견된 동굴과 토기, 떼오빤데꾸아니뜰란의 중앙 신전, 그리고 훔볼트의 도끼모양 홀에서 그 기원을 찾을 수 있다. 차착의례에 투영되어 있는 곡물의 경작과 함께 시작된 리더쉽은 오늘날의 마야사람들에게도 유용한 고대

메소아메리카문명의 유산이다.
