Abstract
This paper presents experimental and computational investigation on the active flow control capability of synthetic jet with a circular exit array. Step-by-step experimental and computational studies were conducted to verify the flow control capability of synthetic jet on a stalled NACA 64A210 airfoil. First, experimental and numerical data were examined by analyzing the baseline characteristics of NACA 64A210 when synthetic jet was off. Based on the aerodynamic data and flow structure, a strategy for flow separation control on the airfoil was established. Synthetic jet actuators were installed to prevent leading-edge stall at high angles of attack. Next, open-loop control experiments were carried out by synthetic jet to
demonstrate the flow separation control in the post-stall regime. Aerodynamic coefficient was examined by changing jet oscillation frequency and array type. Experimental results were analyzed with the help of the computed flow structures. Finally, experiments were conducted to exhibit closed-loop control of the airfoil stall by detecting the onset of flow separation. Synthetic jets were automatically initiated by separation parameters from measured chordwise pressure data, and fully activated by a PID control algorithm. Based on various comparisons, active flow control using synthetic jet was found to be very effective for the leading-edge stalled airfoil.
