Abstract
This paper makes a review on notional syllabus. First of all, it outlines notional
syllabus under such headings as background and trends, names and definitions, and aims and intensions. Then it presents seven claimed advantages of notional syllabus gleaned from many authors. The critique section in turn discusses the claimed advantages and finds no claimed advantages succeed in giving credit to notional syllabus. Further discussion reveals that the focal point of notional syllabus, communicative competence, lacks provision for. training the strategies of language use. The conclusion, rather a closing word, points out that notional syllabus is a development of structural syllabus rather than a replacement of it.
