This paper claims that the control theory should be extended such that local control is dealt with independent of the syntactic properties of PRO as in English and that non-local control is dealt with essential1y as binding of empty pronominals in conjunction with such independent principles as A void Pronoun Principle and relevant language-particular parameters related to empty pronominals.
In particular, it is shown that even lexical categories can be locally controlled in Korean and that local control in Korean is entirely lexically determined. It is also shown that there are various types of local control, such as obligatory local control, optional local control, etc. It is argued that not only the non-locally controlled empty category but also the locally control1ed empty category should be treated as pro rather than as PRO.
