We have plentifuI evidence that when Iearning a foreign Ianguage, the learner tends to transfer his native language system into the target language in the process. The learner is likely to substitute the patterns and meanings of his Ianguage and colture.
Therefore, it is necessary for the teacher to make a comparison of the foreign language with the native language of the students to know better what the learning problems are and what he can better provide for teaching them.
From this point of view, the investigator compared the sound systems and the vocabulary of English and Korean. This work is attempted to predict and explain the problems in learning English as a foreign language for Korean speakers.
The method of analysis for this work is an eclectic one adopted from the methodological view-point of Robert Lado(1957), the type of contrastive analysis on English and Spanish sounds by Stockell and others(1965), and the theoretical framework and a practical methodology proposed by Carl James(l980).
