Korean has a special kind of causative construction in which the addition of a causative Morpheme to the base verb does not result in an increase in its valence, unlike the canonical causative construction. We refer to such causative constructions as non-canonical causatives". In this paper, we shall focus on the non-canonical causatives" to shed light on the following two important issues: (1) What is the motivation behind the non-canonical causatives" in Korean? (2) How do we define the function of the causative morpheme in order to provide a unified account of the causative constructions as a whole, encompassing canonical as well as non-canonical ones? In this paper we demonstrate that both of these issues can be accounted for by characterizing the function of the causative morpheme in semantic terms, that is, by defining it in terms of the notion of semantic transitivity which entails outward development of an action. I propose ORIGAMI MODEL for a unified account of this phenomenon in Korean.ko_KR
