Abstract
.It is well known that mastering of formulaic language can help foreign language learners to gain native-like competence. Empirical research, however, remains sparse in teaching Korean as a foreign language. This study aims to underline the need of research on Korean formulaic language and to recognize its crucial role in improving fluency and accuracy in KFL writing. And this study investigates the relationship between the writers' use of formulaic language and the raters' perception of writing proficiency. 30 compositions by KFL learners were analyzed by 2 judges in terms of their use of formulaic language, and assessed by 2 skilled raters and 2 unskilled raters. The results of the study indicate that the raters assigned higher scores to those compositions that had been written with a higher number of formulaic language. It implicates that appropriate and ample use of formulaic language would lead to improving their KFL writing proficiency. This empirical evidence should be a trigger for the further explorations of Korean formulaic language.
