Newly-Composed Korean Music Westernization, Modernization, or Koreanization?

Abstract

Newly-composed Korean traditional music, called ch'angjak kugak, is an interesting case in point. Emerged in the 1960s and steadily increased its value in the life of South Koreans, it provides an example of a musical change that reflects and forecasts other changes in contemporary South Korea. Although Westernization and modernization are among the most significant responses that define musical changes in small, non-Western nations, including South Korea, a deeper understanding of musical changes, i.e., the analysis of attitudes or aims of composers as well as socio-political situations behind external evidence, often offers a different perspective. This paper examines the musical as well as socio-political changes in contemporary South Korea in the 1970s. A great surge of new Korean music that used traditional materials and national subjects marks this period.

창작국악이라 불리는 신작 한국 전통음악은 흥미롭고 적절한 실례이다. 1960년대 출현해 남한 사람들의 삶에서 꾸준히 가치를 더해간 창작국악은 현대 남한의 다른 변화들을 반영하고 예고하는 음악 변화의 실례가 되어준다. 서구화와 근대화가 남한 등 조그만 비(非) 서구 국가들의 음악 변화를 정의하는 가장 의미 있는 대답들 가운데 하나이기는 하지만, 음악 변화의 더 깊은 연구, 즉 작곡가의 태도나 의도는 물론 외적 증거 뒤에 숨은 사회정치적 상황까지 분석하는 것은 종종 다른 조망을 제시해 준다. 이 글은 1970년대 현대 남한의 음악 변화와 더불어 사회정치적 변화를 살핀다. 전통적 재료와 민족적 주제를 사용하는 새로운 한국음악이 크게 대두한 것이 이 시기 특징이다. 남한의 급변하는 사회 환경 속에서 많은 변화들이 새로운 음악에 나타났다.
