Kil kunak ch'ilch' ae (Seven-Stroke Road Military Musid Rhythmic Pattem: P'ungmul and the Bridging of the North-South Divide

Abstract

Regional distinctions and awareness as expressed through personal and/or collective identity play an essential role in understanding Korea's multifaceted culture and society. Boundaries are as much defined by governmental policies as they are imposed by geographical realities: harsh terrain and difficulty of travel meant that even as late as the early twentieth century 95% of the populace still lived and operated within a small village setting (Buzo 2002: 5-8; Lee, Ki-baik 1984: 218-19). Such relative internal isolation resulted in the formation and maintenance of rich regional varieties of food, dialect, personal character attributes, and melodic-rhythmic styles, customs that coalesced in a significant way during the Chosŏn period (1392-1910). Modem South Korean musicologists - despite recognizing the more recent profound and lasting effects of urbanization, Westernization, and the related emergence and dominance of the mass media - continue to acknowledge and employ such area designations in their writings on Korean musical practice (e.g., Yi Sŏngjae 1999).

지역적인 구분과 개인 및 집단의 정체성을 통해 표현되는 여러 관점은 한국의 다면적인 문화와 사회를 이해하는데 근본적인 역할을 한다. 그 경계는 지리적인 현실로 인해 부과되는 정치적인 방침에 따라 정의된다. 12세기 초에는 지형이 험준하고 여행하기가 곤란했으며, 서민의 95%는 작은 마을 안에서만 살았다. 나라 안의 그러한 지역적인 분리는, 다양한 음식, 방언, 개인의 성격 타입, 멜로디와 리듬 스타일 등, 조선시대(1392~1910) 동안 중요한 방법으로 유착된 관습들로 귀결되었다. 근대 남한의 음악학 연구가들은, 최근 도시화 · 서구화의 결과와 매스 미디어의 발전에 따른 새로운 관계들이 인정됨에도 불구하고, 한국음악계에서 통용되는 그들의 글에 예전의 지역적 명칭을 계속 사용하고 있다.
