Division and Fixation between 20th Century's Seodo and Gyeonggi Popular Song

Abstract

This study aims to contemplate the actual circumstance and changes of 20th century's Gyeong seodo(Seoul and North west part of Korea) popular songs, showing that the scope of Seodo popular song has been withered compared to that of Gyeonggi popular song in the second half of the 20th century. As the title of Gyeong seodo song indicates, Gyeonggi and Seodo popular songs were relevant to each other regarding musical features or categories, singer and geographical backgrounds. However, since the div1sion of Korean Peninsula, Gyeonggi and Seodo popular song have been separated gradually and taken each other's own path.

이 글은 오늘날 서도창의 영역이 경기창에 비해 위축되어 있음을 지적하고, 그 실상과 변모의 과정을 20세기에 한정하여 살펴보기 위해 마련되었다. 경서도창이라는 이름이 드러내고 있듯이, 경기창과 서도창은 음악적 특징이나 범주·창자·지역적 배경 면에서 매우 긴밀히 연관되어 온 경향이 있었으나, 분단 이후에는 경기와 서도의 독자적인 음악 영역으로 분리되어 이전과 그 판도가 사뭇 달라져 있는 상황이다. 분단 이후 경서도창이 분화되고 정착된 과정에 대한 단서는 이창배의 『한국가창대계』에서 찾아볼 수 있다. 『가창대계』는 이창배가 1955년 한국의 전통 성악곡을 집대성한 『가요집성』을 편찬한 이래 몇 차례 증보를 거듭하여 만든 역작으로, 그 이후 출간된 관련 서적에 절대적인 영향을 끼쳐왔다. 현재 국악에 대한 입문서나 개론서, 해설서 등에 소개되어 있는 통속민요에 대한 내용의 기본 구도는 1976년 출간된 이창배(1916-1983)의 『가창대계』에서 크게 벗어나지 못하고 있다는 인상을 받게 되는데, 경서도 소리에 대한 이와 같은 체계적인 인식과 실천은 이창배에서 비롯되는 것으로 보이기 때문이다.
