Jürgen Habermas의 보편주의적 도덕성 개념

Abstract

이 글은 Jürgen Habermas의 도덕적 관점 개념이 그의 의사소통적 행위 이론의 구조 내에서 어떻게 규정되고 있는가를 탐색하는 데 그 목적이 있다. Habermas는 그가 재개념화한 합리성, 곧 의사소통적 합리성을 토대로 도덕성의 의미를 도덕적 문제사태에 참여하는 구성원들 간의 담론활동의 맥락에서 새롭게 정의하고 있다. 도덕적 행위는 실천적 합리성을 기준으로 하되 주어진 목적을 달성하는 데 있어서의 효율성만을 고려하는 실용적 행위, 그리고 사회적, 문화적 맥락 안에서의 행위주체의 자기이해를 토대로 한 윤리적 행위와 구분된다. 실용적 행위가 목적합리성을 기준으로 한 사고를 요하는 행위라는 점에서 주어진 목적이나 가치 자체의 의미를 고려의 대상에서 제외하는 데 비해 윤리적 행위는 이들을 포함하기는 하지만 여전히 행위의 기준을 보편성의 원리에서 찾는 것은 아니라는 점에서 도덕적 행위와 구분된다. Habermas는 도덕적 행위의 기준이 되는 실천적 합리성을 그의 의사소통적 합리성에서 찾고 이를 토대로 도덕적 사고는 타인의 이해관심을 자기의 것과 동일하게 고려하는 태도를 요구한다는 점을 주장한다. 이 글은 Habermas의 담론윤리학의 핵심이 되는 도덕적 관점 개념에 의해 도덕성은 어떻게 정의될 수 있으며 그에 따라 도덕적으로 사고하고 행위한다는 말이 어떤 의미로 쓰여야 하는지를 논의한다.

Pessimism draws the contour of today's theoretical views concerning the attempts to situate the issues of morality in the discourse of rationality. In many cases the pessimistic critique of the notion of rationality is directed to the instrumental limit ofthe notion of the Enlightenment rationality which in my view resulted from limited interpretations of the modernist form of rationality. In this essay I investigate Jürgen Habermas's notion of the moral point of view in the context of his theory of communicative rationality. My concern is basically to illuminate the comprehensiveness of Habermas's reinterpretation of rationality and his theoretical efforts to develop it to be a normative concept that can be the basis of a moral theory. The notion of the moral point of view construed by Habermas in his discourse ethics is distinguished from other forms of practical considerations―pragmatic and ethical considerations―in that it is based upon a universalism by suggesting the moral agent to consider other people's interests and values and negotiate with them to perform his or her action. This view is originally developed by Kant as the notion of the categorical imperative, but Habermas supplements the Kantian notion of universalism by putting it in the broad context of the moral agents' communicative practice. While the universal basis is made by Kant in the consciousness of each moral agent and for this reason the issue of how it is possible is not well explained, Habermas's notion of universalism is one that is established by the very communicating activities of the moral agents that proceeds by their rational considerations.
