Abstract
There are many windy days throughout the year in Jeju Island in Korea. The present paper attempts to clarify the climatological character of the prevailing wind and its synoptic situations for this island. It is used the daily wind data at Jeju and Seonguipo from 1968 to 1977. With the whole daily wind data, the data of the daily mean wind welocity with 5m/s over are only used to this analysis, and the largest wind welovity direction data on same day are used too. The sum of the days with daily mean wind velocity 5m/s over during the decade is 1002 days. In Jeju, the days with northwesterly are 42.8%, however, those arc only 9.9% in Seoguipo. Otherwise, Seoguipo has northeasterly with 56. 8 %. The northwesterly in Jeju appears prevailingly in winter season. Meanwhile, the northeasterly in Seoguipo blows throughout the seasons from spring to autumn. Fig. 3 and 4 shows the Pentad's frequency of largest wind velocity direction during the decade at Jeju and Seoguipo. The singularity and the intermisson of northwesterly in winter sharply appear. The prevailing winds in Jeju Island can be classified into four types as shown in table 4. Those climatological characters and weather situations are as follows;
