Abstract
Koreans, from birth to death, live on rice. Wealth has been measured by the amount of rice production of each farm house. Eighty percent of rice in South Korea is grown on paddies watered from reservoirs. Therefore, measuring the capacity of reservoirs is a means of estimating rice production. This study aims to build a model for estimation of rice production in South Korea using LANDSAT Imagery and rice statistics provided by the Department of Agriculture. Then it will be applied to North Korea to determining production there, assuming North Korea farmers also cultivate using the same method as South Korea farmers. The technique used in this study is regression analysis which indicates the strong relationship between the amount of rice harvested and the size of reservoirs.(0.87). North Korea, having published no agricultural statistics since 1945, is and area of major interest. Rice production in the North, if it is considered along with its population, is a strong indication of the food situation there. This study will provide an example for other areas where agricultural statistics are either not available and/or not possible.
