Solution Processes in the Munkyong

- This study aimed to investigate some respects of solution processes in a small karst basin during summer and autumn. The study area is located at Bugok-RI, Munkyǒng, 4.5km north to Jǒmchon City. The catchment size is of 5.39㎢. The geology of the study area is mainly of relatively homogeneous limestone. Some typical karst landforms, such as doline, limestone Cave, etc. are developed. The research period is of 176 days. The hydrochemistry of runoff was by two rain gauges. The water output from experimental basin was measured through 'Midesection method'. Water samples were collected every ten days(weekly in July) from precipitation, springs and stream The chemistry was analyzed in terms of dissolved calcium, magnesium, bicarbonate, sulphate and pH. Rock tablets of 2.0×2.0×0.3cm size were installed at the soil/bedrock interface for the research period for measuring limestone solution rate. During the research period 73.6% of the dissolved load is carried by stream discharge 10% of the flow time, corresponding to the flood period in July. While 5.53% of the dissolved load is carried by low discharge 50% of the flow time. This is equivalent to the period of water shortage in May, June and October. The concentration and the amount of suspended sediments are positively correlated with discharge. The temporal transport pattern of suspended load is similar to that of dissolved load.
