The purpose of this study is, first, to examine the spatial distribution and recent locational change of business services in Korea and, second, to identify the spatial linkages among business services and manufacturing firms to analyse what kind of characteristics of firms to help to reinforce the intraregional business service linkages, and third, this study goes on to clarify the difference of spatial linkages in accordance with the characteristics of business services and to consider the perception on the locational aspects by business service establishment.

The study regions of Pusan and Masan are selected out for the analysis. The main data sets used for the analysis. The main data sets used for the analyses are the Establishment Census of Korea 1986 by Economic Planning Board, and the result of questionnaire survey and interviews on Manufacture of Textiles(SIC32), Manufacture of Chemicals(SIC 35), Manufacture of Fabricated Metal Products (SIC 38) and Business Services (SIC84).

The major findings of the study are summarized as follow :

1. The Location business services can be characterized by a strong concentration in Seoul and other large cities. This is due to the sheer size of the large cities and also with the tendency of major corporate headquaters to be located in the large cities.

2. The pattern of Business service linkages by manufacturing firms varies with the types and technological levels of business services. A cross-examination on the service linkages according to industries, size, and types of firms reveals that service linkage patterns by industries do not differ greatly, but large firms show a weaker intra-regional linkage than smaller firms and that the intra-regional linkage by externally controlled plants is far stronger than that by logical single plants. The dependency on other regions by Masan is higher than the case of Puasn. Furthermore, the technological complexity and specialty of service functions gradually increase the externalization of corporate services. Both, externally controlled plants and small firms turn out to have a high ratio of service externalization.

3. The analysis on the linkages of business services indicates that the customers of business services are mostly manufacturing firms, and that the demand and supply of business services are limited within Pusan and Masan themselves regions, indicating that the business services in these regions have disadvantageous locational conditions in facilities, informations, etc.

From this analysis, business services and manufacturing firms are found to have close linkages, which finding calls for a need to develop business service which can induce manufacturing firms in order to boost regional economy.
