루이스 하츠의 자유주의 사회 분석 재고

Abstract

1955년 출간된 루이스 하츠의 『미국의 자유주의 전통』은 여전히 미국 정치사사엥 강력한 영향력을 미치고 있는 연구이다. 『미국의 자유주의 전통』은 출간 즉시 미국 합의주의 학파의 완성으로 극찬을 받았으나 이후 갈등학파의 지속적인 공격으로, 1980년대에는 오류로 가득 찬 잘못된 스칼라십의 전형으로까지 폄하되었었다. 1990년대부터 하츠는 재조명을 받기 시작하였고 최근의 연구들은 하츠의 미국 자유주의 분석이 지니는 풍부한 개념에 주목하여 갈등학파의 사례들도 재점검 하고 있다. 하츠에 대한 미국 역사학계와 정치학계의 지속적인 논쟁과 재조명은 별도로 하츠의 미국 자유주의 분석은 특히 외부의 관찰자들에게는 대단히 유용한 미국 정치에 대한 분석틀을 제공한다. 미국적 정신의 핵심을 이루면서 미국의 국내외 정책의 이념적 기반을 이루고 있는 자유, 자유주의가 정확히 의미하는 바가 무엇이며 자유주의적 신념이 미친 영향을 이해하는 것은 쉽지않은 과제이다.

More than fifty years after its publication in 1955, Louis Hartz's The Liberal Tradition in America continues to wield its influence on the analysis of American political thought. As soon as its publication, Louis Harts's work praised as the culmination of consensus view on American politics. Hartz and his American Liberalism became, however, the foremost target of many criticisms since they posed bold and unpleasing challenges to the American way. Critics of them were so successful to disdain him as the model of bad scholarship and his work had been almost forgotten in the 1980s. From the 1990s scholars both form history and political science started to reexamine his work. Nowadays many find his work is still a valid framework even to explain conflictual cases which has been used to attack Hartz himself. Furthermore American Liberalism formulated by Hartz can work as a very useful intellectual guidance for foreigners since Hartz was one of the few American scholar who studied american politics in terms of comparison. This essay is to further our understanding of American as one of the best sources for the study of American political institutions, foreign policy, and even American social science.
