도교와 술수 : 분류체계의 변천과 4~6세기 도경을 중심으로

Abstract

술수와 도교는 모두 근대적 학문연구의 대상에서 제외되었던 대표적 분야일 것이다. 중국적 사고와 논리에 대한 재고찰이 시도되고 문화에 대한 접근이 강조되면서 이 두 분야는 새롭게 각광을 받기 시작했다고 할 수 있다. 그러나 술수는 여전히 과학과 주술이라는 이분법으로 인해 그 학문적 범주 자체가 제대로 인식되지 못하고 있다. 도교와 술수의 관계에 대한 문제는 도교와 술수라는 이름으로 묶일 수 있는 문화적 현상의 많은 부분이 중첩되기 때문에 그 해명에 어려움이 따른다. 도교가 성립될 당시부터 도사와 술사에 대한 구분은 모호했다. 도사와 술사라는 이미지 형성 자체가 중국의 학술⋅종교문화사의 전개와 불가분의 관계에 있었다. 본 논문에서는 도교와 술수가 중국의 전통적 분류체계에서 어떻게 자리매김되고, 어떠한 변천 과정을 거쳤는지를 살펴본다. 그와 함께 도교가 전통적 분류체계 속에 등장하기 시작한 시기를 전후하여 도경 속에 나타난 술수적 요소를 검토함으로써 술수의 도교적 수용과 전개양상을 다각도에서 고찰해 보고자 한다.

This paper aims to explore the development of Shushu (i.e., numerical methods) and Daojiao (i.e., teaching of way) in the ancient and early medieval Chinese taxonomic classification. Drawing special attention to early Daoist scriptures around the time when Daojiao first appeared in this classification system, the paper also intends to delve into the Daoist adoption of Shushu in such areas as cosmology, soteriology, and practice. Most, if not all, of the modern scholars of Chinese studies did not investigate Shushu and Daojiao until they reconsidered the Chinese way of thinking under the aegis of recent critiques of rationality. In particular, a cultural approach provides fresh insight into Shushu and Daojiao as areas of research. Nonetheless, the dichotomy between science and magic, still prevalent in academia, makes it difficult to have a proper understanding of Shushu as a comprehensive category, since Shushu includes various areas such as astronomy, calendar system, astrology, and numerical methods for prediction (e.g., divination and Fengshui).
