Abstract

With a close reading of the life-long experience of Jesusa Palancares from Elena Poniatowska’s Hasta no verte Jesus mio, I analyze the way the protagonist, as believer subject, perpetuates a religious tradition deeply rooted on the process of Catholic conversion in Spanish colonial times. From this process emerged a cultural system that orders and give sense to the world Mexicans find themselves. The notion of tragic subject allows me to examine the way Jesusa Palancares, despite her rebellion against the traditional Church and other social institutions in Mexico, ended accepting her place in a World-order where she finally can be an intelligible subject.
