Diagnosis of congenital heart diseases using contrast echocardiography

Contrast echocardiography has played an important
role in the development of ultrasound as the leading
noninvasive technique for the evaluation of various
cardiovascular entities. This is useful in identifying
normal and abnormal cardiac structures, extra and
intracardiac shunts and in the evaluation of complex
congenital heart problems. We studied contrast echocardiography
for the patients with congenital heart
diseases (33 cases), and compared the results with
those of cardiac catheterization and cardiac angiography.
The results were as follows
1. Sixteen of 17 cyanotic heart diseases were
tetralogy of Fallot, and we could observe the
interventricular right·to-left shunt and simultaneous
filling of left ventricle and aorta in all patients.
2. In 11 patients with Eisenmenger syndrome, 5
patients were VSD, 4 patients ASD, and 2 patients
PDA. Contrast echocardiogram showed the exact
site of right to left shunt in all patients.
3. Four cases of ASD and 1 case of VSD showed
negative contrast echoes, revealing left-ta-right shunts
at interatrial and interventricular septum.
4. In all cases, same results were obtained by
cardiac catheterization and angiography.
