박은식의 사상전변 - 생존과 자존 모색의 도정

Abstract

본고는 근대한국의 지식인들이 한반도의 생존을 넘어 자존(自尊)의 문제를 어떻게 풀어나갔는가 하는 문제의식에서 출발한다. 구체적으로 박은식(朴殷植, 1859∼1925)이 한국의 생존과 자존을 위한 돌파구를 찾기 위해 어떠한 사상전변을 겪었는가를 추적했다. 계몽운동 초기의 유럽근대문명 수입, 양명학에 의지한 근대문명 비판, 유학과 중화주의 비판, 민족주의의 고취, 보편정신의 탐색 등이 본고가 따라간 박은식 사상의 궤적이다. 중화주의와 근대유럽문명이라는 거대문명이 충돌한 한반도에서 박은식은 문명에도 유학에도 나아가 민족주의에도 그대로 머물 수 없었다. 생존경쟁과 동행한 문명의 비도덕성을 비판하고, 유학의 중국중심주의와 비실용성을 비판하면서 박은식은 민족주의를 고취하지만, 민족주의를 유일한 이념으로 삼을 수도 없었다. 중화주의와 문명을 비판하지 않고서는 민족의 밝은 미래를 전망할 수 없었지만, 민족주의의 입장에서는 문명도 중화주의도 비판할 수 없었다. 문명에도 유학에도 거리를 둔 박은식은 민족주의를 이야기함과 동시에 민족을 넘어선 보편의 가치를 찾고, 생존을 위해서가 아니라 인류의 자격을 갖추기 위해 민족이 나아갈 길을 제시하고자 한다.

This study begins from a consideration of how modern Korean thinkers dealt with issues regarding not only the survival but also the self-dignity of the Korean peninsula. Specifically, it closely follows the courses of change in the philosophy of Park Eun-sik (朴殷植, 1859-1925) in his search for breakthroughs toward the survival and selfdignity of Korea. Parks trajectory as laid out in this study includes the importation of modern European Civilization in the early Enlightenment movement, his critique of Civilization based on Yangmingism, his critique of Confucianism and Sinocentrism, his advocacy of nationalism, and his search for a universal spirit. On the Korean peninsula, a land on which the two huge civilizations of Sinocentrism and modern European Civilization clashed, Park Eun-sik could settle for neither Confucianism nor nationalism. Critical of the immorality of Civilization accompanied by competitive survival, and also of the impracticalities and Sinocentric views of Confucianism, Park advocates nationalism. However, it cannot serve as his sole ideology. A brighter future for his people cannot be envisioned without a thorough critique of Sinocentrism and Civilization, but that critique is not possible from the position of nationalism. Park Eun-sik, keeping his distance from both Civilization and Confucianism, speaks not only of nationalism but also of universal values which extend beyond ones own nation. He suggests to his people a future course not solely for survival but for human dignity.
