인과에 대한 영향 이론 옹호

Abstract

이 논문은 인과에 대한 루이스의 반사실적 분석의 최종 형태인 영향이론이 현재 처한 문제 상황을 영향 이론 내재적으로 해결할 수 있음을 보이고자 한다. 영향 이론은 과잉인과의 문제를 결국은 해결할 수 없다는 비판을 받아왔다. 늦은 선점과 압도 선점의 경우에 영향 이론이 원인이 아닌 선점된 대안도 원인으로 판정했기 때문이다. 이 문제를 해결하기 위해 나는 영향의 정도를 비교할 객관적 기준을 도입할 것을 제안했다. 나의 해결책은 두 사건 사이의 영향관계를 분석하여 영향 정도를 판단할 기준을 만들고, 이 기준에 따라 한 결과 사건에 대한 둘 이상의 원인 후보 사건들 각각이 결과 사건과 가지는 영향 정도를 비교한 뒤, 최종적으로 결과 사건에 대한 영향 정도가 상대적으로 더 큰 원인 후보 사건을 그 결과 사건의 원인으로 규정한다. 수정된 영향 이론은 늦은 선점의 문제와 압도 선점의 문제에서 모두 선점한 원인 사건이 대안 사건보다 결과 사건에 더 큰 영향을 줌을 밝힘으로써 선점한 원인 사건을 결과 사건의 원인으로 올바르게 판정한다. 만일 나의 해결책이 성공적이라면 영향 이론은 과잉인과의 문제를 해결하고 인과 분석의 유력한 후보로 살아남을 수 있을 것이다.

I try to show that Lewiss theory of Causation as Influence(CI) can respond effectively to the objections by using its own tools. The main objection is that CI cannot analyze the cases of redundant causation successfully. In the cases of late preemption and trumping preemption, CI judges as real causes not only preempting events but also preempted alternatives which must not be regarded as causes. To solve this problem, I propose an objective way of judging real causes. My approach is to set the criterion for comparing the degrees of influence that two (or more) candidates of the cause have on an effect, by analyzing the influential relations between any two events. Then we can judge the candidate of higher degree as being the real cause. According to my solution, we can analyze the cases of redundant causation successfully. If this solution is successful, the objections based on the cases of redundant causation cannot be effective any longer. So I conclude that we can still view CI as quite a good analysis of causation.
