dc.description.abstractEnglish education has become our national concern, but it cannot be denied that this has caused the social problem of the English divide. In particular, the present public English education system seems to be in a dilemma because there is a large gap between the goal of improvement of communicative competence in English and the reality of our schools. Thus, this paper discusses why we need to recognize the role of English grammar education in the EFL situation as one of the ways to carry out more realistic and effective English education. It focuses on the necessity of the combination of grammar with communication by reviewing the status of grammar education according to the various second/foreign language education theories and by considering the problems with communicative language teaching in our current educational situation. The concept of grammar has changed from the traditional one and the role and significance of grammar teaching are still being reevaluated. A desirable public education policy should be established on the basis of the real needs of learners and the real situation of schools. To accomplish the goals of effective English education, this paper accordingly suggests that a new approach to grammar teaching be implemented with political support through English education programs.-
