마키아벨리의 포르투나관 연구: 『군주론』을 중심으로

Abstract

본 논문은 마키아벨리의 『군주론』(Il Principe)에 나타난 포르투나(fortuna) 개념을 살펴보고자 하는 글이다. 포르투나는 운명이나 행운 등으로 번역될 수 있다. 마키아벨리는 신의 전일적 지배라는 중세를 넘어 인간의 자유의지가 어느 정도 관철된다고 보는 르네상스기를 살았다. 신이 지배하며 매사에 임재하지도 그렇다고 인간이 주도권을 지닌 시기도 아니었다. 그 어디 중간에 위치한 이행기였던 것이다. 이런 시기 마키아벨리는 국가의 지도자를 위한 책으로 『군주론』을 저술했다. 마키아벨리는 『군주론』을 통해 자신의 능력과 권력을 과신하여 오만한 폭군이 되려는 지도자가 아니라, 세상에 겸손하고 자신과 주위를 돌아볼 수 있는 지도자의 상을 제시하고 있는 것이다. 이러한 『군주론』의 제대로 된 의도와 의미를 깨닫도록 도와주는 것이 역량 즉 비르투 개념이 아닌 바로 포르투나의 개념인 것이다.

This paper explores the concept of fortuna in Machiavellis The Prince. Fortuna can be translated into destiny, good luck and so on. Machiavelli lived in the Renaissance period, in which the Middle Ages of Gods rule was surpassed and the free will of human beings seemed to pass through to what extent. It was a transitional period. In such a period Machiavelli wrote The Prince for the national leader. Machiavelli suggests no leader with overconfidence in his ability and power to be an arrogant tyrant, but a leader who is humble and can look around himself and surroundings. It is not the concept of virtù, but the concept of Fortuna to help us understand the real intention and meaning of The Prince.
