dc.description.abstract | Photonic devices have been developed for advanced applications such as supercontinuum
sources, parametric amplifiers, pulse compression and wavelength conversion devices, etc. by enhancing nonlinearity and tailoring the dispersion curve. In this dissertation, focusing on supercontinuum source, highly nonlinear photonic devices - photonic crystal fiber, channel waveguide and slot waveguide were introduced and analyzed based on the material properties of the refractive index and Kerr coefficient. Numerical and analytic design methods regarding highly nonlinear photonic crystal fiber (HNPCF) based on silica, non-silica materials were introduced focusing on dispersion tailoring. In the silica HNPCF controlled to lie pump wavelength within anomalous regime close to zero dispersion wavelength, pump evolution was observed by solving nonlinear Schr¨odinger equation and compared with experimental results. Also, the material properties of non-silica glass applicable in the mid-IR were introduced. For the development of compact and low power devices, dispersion properties of channel waveguides with high refractive and high Kerr coefficient materials were analyzed. From the dispersion curve for TE- and TM- like modes, the tailoring of zero dispersion wavelengths was provided and pulse evolutions in channel waveguides with silicon and tantalum pentoxide were examined. In order to understand the structural property and design of a slot waveguide featuring high nonlinearity, the dispersion curve was analyzed with respect to the normalized index contrast between adjacent layers. It was confirmed that mode confinement can be enhanced without spectral limit and the mode confinement and dispersion curve are closely related. geometry are also investigated to enable flexible tuning of the waveguide dispersion. From these results, the feasibility of low-threshold supercontinuum sources was shown using a Ta2O5/TiO2/silica slot waveguide. | - |
