This study analyzes the aesthetic values of repression embodied by the body and clothing, which serves as a metaphor that suggests humans desire, sense and value systems, on the basis of the definitions and characteristics of repression. repression is a conscious and unconscious way of controlling human life and behavior through power and pressure. Essentially, repression was born to restrain instinctual desires while desire for power has continuously changed the way of repression. Creative desire has been a mechanism of autonomously performing repression. In this study, physical, social and psychological repression embodied by the body and clothing are referred to instinctual, power and creative desires, respectively, from the point of biological, social and aesthetic views. Desire is referred to a behavior to overcome mens imperfections with individual security, sense of belonging and the pursuit of an ideal, which are obtained by living as a social creature.
In terms of the body and clothing, repression is a restriction on natural development or activity of the body, or a temporary or permanent change of the body for body modification, which results in physical and psychological distortion. Clothing reflecting the distortion is understood as repression. Visible formativeness – a consequence of the repression – is a formative mechanism that helps man autonomously accept repression. It also lays the groundwork for further analysis on aesthetic values.
Given the definition of repression, repression is divided into one through the body and the other through clothing in this study. Repression through the body is sub-categorized depending on whether it is temporary or permanent. Temporary repression on the body includes every kind of physical changes made on the exterior of the body, while permanent repression refers to changes made into the skin and to structural changes. As a consequence of the repression on the body, perceptible changes of senses like forms, colors, texture, smell and taste are exhibited partially or on the entire body. In comparison to the past when time and space manipulated partial changes through physical methods, the command of time and space is counteracted in todays fashion. Instead, repression is found in all areas of the body through physical, chemical and surgical methods.
Repression expressed through clothing is seen through revealing/ concealing, contraction/expansion, and deconstruction/reconstruction. For revealing and concealing, regional aspects from the biological viewpoint, decency or indecency from the sociological viewpoint, and the desire and conflict between revealing and concealing from the aesthetic viewpoint are a factor of repression. People reveal their body without concealing, make the use of characteristics of materials such as transparency, thickness, draping, etc., or wear garments that fit tightly due to their structural features or the way of putting them on. In the past, the relationship between women and men was seeing and be seen – males looking at females. Thus, mens desire for power was demonstrated in a form of repression. In contrast, seeing and be seen are now focused on the body which is substituted by material values rather than power relationships between men and women. Indeed, more attention has been drawn to males revealing and concealing, blurring the lines between men and women and subsiding sexual commercialization.
Second, contraction and expansion make proportional changes to the body as a whole or draw attention to a particular area of the body. The sociological interpretation of biological differences of the body gives the proportion of the body and the size of a particular area a symbolic significance. The focus of attention differentiates individuals, increasing competition and mutuality or bringing a person to shared pleasure.
Desire for power is sought all the while. It was often the case that males would expand an area of their body to express their instinct and desire for power. Female bodies, as a substitute symbol of male dominance, were not only repressed both through contraction and expansion but also suppressed by themselves in their attempt to secure their power. However today, clothing, diet, body care and plastic surgery are examples of repression in both men and women.
Third, deconstruction/reconstruction is found in the traditional sense of sex, the reproduction of the body seen from the point of clothing structure, and the universal image of the body exhibited through clothing. This desire for creativity represses the body in its symbolic demonstration of repression on the body and clothing that are induced by stereotype. Deconstruction and reconstruction is increasingly understood as a reflection of modern fashion.
The aesthetic values drawn from the exhibition of repression and on the body and clothing are categorized into narcissism, fetishism and aestheticism.
Narcissism comes from the energy of Eros, or Libido, being concentrated on ones body, self and psychological traits. The concept includes self-love through mirroring transference, object love through idealization transference, and regressive narcissism through the recovery of originality: Self-love is developed from the current self, object love from the idealization of the self formed at a certain time of growth, and regressive narcissism from the denial of repression (change) and the recovery of the self. Narcissism, which is self-confidence revealed by the body and clothing, is actualized by way of repression on the body and clothing. Narcissism manifests itself when a person tortures oneself with piercing or tattoo and endures the extreme pains, or when a person sees a modified self-image after wearing a tight lacing like a corset. Narcissism sustains life, as it necessitates self-confidence and offers psychological stability.
Second, fetishism is interpreted as a certain sexual image coming from the body and clothing. Fetishism can also be interpreted as a way of pursuing pleasure through visible sexual discordance as it is a challenge against the conventional standards or general rules of appearance and clothing. If fetishism is a confrontation with the conventional standards or general rules on appearance and clothing, its range includes the modification of the shape of the body through surgery, sexual reassignment and even cross-dressing (wearing clothes of the other sex). The exhibition of sexual fetishism in the body and clothing shows the sexual instinct of an individual or a group. People seek a wide range of objects: skinny jeans, bondage fashion like tightly fitting shoes, tight lacing like a corset, materials associated with a trait of the body, and a uniform that reflects the aspects of a job. In a consumption-oriented society, an obsession with luxury or designer brands is defined as materialistic fetishism. Fetishism sustains fashion change, as it diversifies repression through the body and clothing, while further differentiating clothing items and sophisticating styles.
Third, aestheticism is a body-and-clothing expression of the idealization toward aesthetic desires. There is ideal beauty of the era, which is associated with when and where, while an independent idealization of beauty is referred to absolute beauty. In the pursuit of aestheticism, striving to actualize the idealized image of the body, repression is observed both in the body and clothing. The pursuit of beauty of the era unites individuals and members of society, stabilizing the changes of clothing. Meanwhile, the pursuit of absolute beauty is about creativity or aesthetic taste of designers and consumers, which differentiates individuals. Aestheticism sustains creativity, as it brings sustainability to changes in fashion.
While narcissism is an instinctive desire grounded on the originality and confidence of the self that results in refusing repression, fetishism is a desire for power that expedites repression in the pursuit of materialistic value or sexual fantasy. Aestheticism is a desire for creativity that symbolizes the body-and-clothing repression in the pursuit of aesthetic idealism. In all, the aesthetic values of narcissism, fetishism and aestheticism lies in the quest of ideals to satisfy desires for instinct, power and creativity, which appears to be a circular structure. The instinct of seeking beauty is only possible for human beings.
In terms of repression, the origin of clothing is a persons creative outcome in response to natures repression. In the past history of fashion, repression from nature, society and self was embodied in the body and clothing, describing desires for instinct, power and creativity through visible forms. At that time, repression was part of a struggle for leadership between nature and men, between God and men, and between men and men. It was the result of recognizing repression as a way of dominance and fragmentarily embracing desires for instinct, power and creativity.
What enables the public to embrace changes in fashion in late Capitalism without fierce resistance or backlash is the changes of formativeness demonstrated by repression through the body and clothing. These changes satisfy human desire for instinct, power and creativity. Repression evokes desire, and the pursuit of desire leads to another repression. Repression of the modern fashion, which is a consequence of seeking aesthetic ideals, causes different physical and psychological repression through the body and clothing to an initiator, a user and a spectator. The aesthetic values of narcissism, fetishism and aestheticism, as an expression of desire for instinct, power and creativity, can be substituted with each other for interpretation according to the attitudes of an initiator, a user and a spectator.
When added with spiritual values, the material value of design increases significantly. In todays fashion, mythological characters as aesthetic ideals, the variation of animals and humans, and humans encounter with science and technology require a new definition of repression. Repression has become a way of dominance for creation and harmony, not for constraint and prohibition. In order for changes of fashion to protect the dignity and freedom of human beings and to contribute to fostering peace and coexistence of nature, humans and God, proper analysis and life direction toward aesthetic values of repression through the body and clothing are required.
